Origin and background of the ICT-Asia programme

Taking into account the dynamism of the ICT sector in Asia, a regional programme for education and fundamental and applied research in ICT has been set up through the scientific network of the French cooperation in this region, along with research bodies and higher education institutions. The ICT-Asia programme was launched in November 2003 in Bangkok at the first regional seminar held at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), which was attended by more than 70 representatives from France and a dozen countries in the region

Countries involved

In partnership with France, the programme involves the ten member countries of ASEAN (Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) as well as specific Northeast Asian countries (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan) and South Asian countries (India, Pakistan).

Objective

The objective of the programme is to reinforce on a mutual benefit basis high level collaborations with emerging and developed Asian countries and to contribute to the integration of less advanced countries in the area into the information society.

Implementation strategy

  • promote the opportunities for co-operation with France in the field of ICT and develop information and exchange mechanisms;
  • select and fund integrated basic and applied research projects fostering technological innovation and technological transfer with a regional focus between France and at least two partnering Asian countries, including one country eligible to the programme “Solidarity with developing countries” (Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam);
  • foster synergies with other regional and multilateral programmes in the field and in this region (EU/ASEM, ADB, AUF, …)

Hosted by the Asian Institute of Technology on a server provided by the French Cooperation.
